A master is not a file

The master is too often discussed as an object to deliver. A WAV, a folder, a box ticked. For us, the master is first a decision: this is the sound we stand behind.
That decision carries choices. The voice too forward or too far. The bass that occupies or that lets the track breathe. The silence between two lines. A flat master is not neutral. It is simply unfinished.
The file is what travels. It has to be clean, identifiable, ready for platforms. But clean is not beautiful. A correct export can still be a bad record.
That is why we do not split “production” and “going live” as if they were foreign trades. If nobody has decided the sound, putting it online is not a release. It is a send-off.
A label holds the master because it holds taste. Not to collect files. So that a song, tomorrow, still sounds the way we meant it.
